#BreaktheBias
A very special bias campaign has been launched by Equality in Tourism, around the International Women’s Day 2022 theme #BreakTheBias : a mighty effort and a brilliant result for a survey of voices and videos from women across 14 countries and six continents!
According to EiT- the association of tourism experts who advocate for gender equality- each woman has a unique perspective on gender bias in the tourism industry: from financial difficulties to undervalued care work.
Gender bias is everywhere. But there is hope. The #BreakTheBias campaign aims to provide a platform for women in tourism to share their experiences and inspire us on the path to change. It asks us to consider our experiences of gender bias and what we can do to break it.
They have designed three questions based around this year's theme #BreakTheBias: the first question focuses on internalised gender bias, the second on bias within the industry and the third on actions towards a less biased future in tourism.
Browsing the EiT website and fb pages you will meet Dorcas in Kenya, Carla in Spain, Yashika in India, or Alexia exploring her view of gender bias in tourism whilst Miora calls for a platform to celebrate women’s immense contribution to the industry and Hauweng Tourism For All are preparing an e-learning platform for just that. We will read that Ethic Etapes emphasizes the importance of diversity in tourism and underlines age as an aspect of gender bias. We will round things off with a strong and important message on layered biases in tourism from Sheila in Zimbabwe. Finally from Indonesia, Portugal, London, Italy, Greece, Karen, Ita, Iliada, Malika, and more, will call for support and security, for clear evaluation criteria, for women to take on decision-making positions so that women owners and managers are no longer the exception.
And what do you think about gender bias in tourism?
